Build This DIY Sprinkler Tunnel for Endless Summer Fun
If you're looking for a cheap backyard activity that delivers maximum fun with minimal effort, this might be one of the best projects you'll build all summer.
This DIY Kids Car Wash Sprinkler transforms a few pieces of PVC pipe into a giant water tunnel that kids can ride through on bikes, scooters, ride-on cars, or simply run through on a hot day.
It's part sprinkler, part car wash, and part backyard water park.
Most importantly?
The kids absolutely love it.
Why I Love This Project
Every parent knows the challenge.
School holidays arrive.
The kids say they're bored.
And suddenly you're trying to invent entertainment from thin air.
This project solves that problem beautifully.
It's affordable, reusable, easy to store, and creates hours of outdoor fun without needing expensive toys or a trip anywhere.
Just connect a garden hose and let the fun begin.

How It Works
The concept is incredibly simple.
Water enters through a garden hose connected to the frame.
Small holes drilled into the top pipes create a curtain of water that sprays down over the tunnel.
Kids can ride, run, walk, crawl, or zoom through the sprinkler while getting soaked in the process.
Think of it as a miniature car wash built specifically for kids.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Start by collecting all PVC pipes and fittings.
The frame is made from basic plumbing components available at most hardware stores.
One of the best parts of this project is how inexpensive it is to build compared to commercial water play equipment.
Step 2: Build the First Side Frame
Lay out the base pipes on the ground.
One side of the frame includes a T-connector which will later become the water inlet.
Attach the vertical pipes and top horizontal section to create the first upright frame.
By the end of this step, you'll have something that resembles a giant rectangular goal post.
Step 3: Build the Second Side
Repeat the process for the opposite side.
The only difference is that this frame doesn't require the hose connection, so standard elbow fittings can be used throughout.
Once completed, you'll have two matching frames connected together to create the sprinkler tunnel.
Step 4: Connect the Hose
Install the hose fitting assembly and connect it to the T-connector.
This creates the water entry point for the entire system.
If desired, use thread tape to help minimise leaks and improve the seal.
Once connected, the sprinkler tunnel is almost ready to go.
Step 5: Create the Sprinkler Effect
This is where the magic happens.
Using a 2mm drill bit, drill small holes along the top horizontal pipes.
A few things to remember:
Drill through one side only
Space holes approximately 5–10cm apart
Closer spacing creates stronger spray
Wider spacing creates a softer mist
Position holes facing downward
Once water flows through the frame, the holes create a curtain of water that rains down onto the kids below.
Make It Even Better
Want to take this project to the next level?
Try adding:
Pool Noodle Bumpers
Slide pool noodles over the vertical posts for a colourful car wash look.
Bubble Wash Station
Add buckets of bubbles so kids can "wash" their bikes and ride-on cars.
Car Wash Signs
Create fun signs using cardboard or corflute.
Colour Themes
Paint the frame in bright colours to match your backyard play area.
Obstacle Course
Combine the sprinkler tunnel with other backyard challenges for the ultimate summer course.
Why Kids Love It
Kids naturally love activities that combine water and movement.
This project encourages:
Outdoor play
Physical activity
Imagination
Social play
Creativity
It turns an ordinary backyard into a mini water park using materials that cost a fraction of commercial alternatives.
Storage & Reuse
The best part?
When summer ends, simply disconnect the frame and store it away.
The PVC components can be reused year after year, making this one of those projects that keeps delivering value long after it's built.
Total Dad Take
Some of the best family memories come from the simplest ideas.
This DIY Sprinkler Car Wash costs very little, takes less than an hour to build, and creates the kind of backyard fun kids talk about long after summer is over.
It's easy, affordable, reusable, and guaranteed to become the most popular attraction in your backyard.
And if it keeps the kids entertained while you enjoy a cold drink nearby, that's a win for everyone.
